This October half term we are hosting an inter generational roller skating week bringing younger and older generations together through roller skating. The aim is to connect young people with their older neighbours to learn and build friendships together.

A Podcast to mark the 76th anniversary of the Empire Windrush’s arrival in Britain. The first Windrush generation moved to the UK by invitation between 1945-1960.
If you are a descendant of the Windrush generation and are interested in taking part in this new podcast series, we would love to hear from you. It would involve a 15-minute informal interview that we will use to turn into a podcast about how you have benefited from volunteering. If you know any Windrush members who would also be happy to take part in the podcast, it would be great to interview them as well.

Young people are volunteering their time to reach out to the elderly in the community in a safe way. Making older people to feel more loved and cared for.
We would like to thank BBC Children in Need for their support through We Move Fund which has made this project possible. Through the 18-months project, we have engaged and empowered 400 young people focusing particularly on serving the elderly citizens.
This is successful for one reason. We ensure more young people in our community have their voices heard and given the opportunity to design and lead on the issues that matter to them.
During Volunteers’ Week in June, we will come together to recognise and celebrate the impact of our youth social action.

We are inviting Newham residents (all ages) to get involved in this new resident-led community radio where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and be heard – and have a bit of fun doing just that!
This is an alternative space for those young urbanites who have limited public spaces to meet and share stories about their social and cultural interests, and to pursue peer relationships.
The Radio will provide all sorts of opportunity for participation, from technical know-how, researching and presenting, and developing skills that can lead to employment and lifelong hobbies.”

We conducted a community survey of over 100 young people aged 8-18 to find out about their local community how it could be improved. Going to young people’s turf, spoke to many of you with lived experience of violence and the youth justice system, and you opened up about your fears and everyday worries. We also discussed some of the things that can help to make our Newham a better place live.
You told us you felt stereotyped, based in part on the way you dressed portraying you as bad. A huge number of teenagers felt sometimes intimidated to open up to adults for fear of being criticized. Some of you expressed “you cannot hang out with older folks either as you feel like you don’t have much in common”. Young people’s plan of action was that volunteering their time to run an intergenerational project where Young are Serving the Old to positively challenge the ongoing stereotypes of young and old alike. This project was chosen as young people believe that the general public perceived them as bad so they want to show residents that young people can be approachable, caring, fun, hard‐working and helpful
Therefore, our You Social Action project aims to bring young people together with the elderly in activities that will positively challenge the ongoing stereotypes of young and old alike.
Tasks can be anything from help with using new electronic devices such as smart phones, even organize photos and memorabilia or make gifts for the elderly and so much more all shown to create space for mutual understanding and meaningful relationships.
